North Dakota Eclectics

The tribe known as the Crows were once part of the Hidatsas, becoming a nomadic tribe. They moved west, establishing villages on or along the Bighorn River in Montana and Wyoming. Being nomadic, they frequently encountered other tribes, and were often at war. They were known for making excellent weapons.

Lewis and Clark reported that there were about three hundred and fifty lodges of Crows, and that they numbered approximately three thousand and five hundred people. By 1843, it was estimated that they had about four hundred tents, and that they owned as many as ten thousand horses.
